The Peninsula Bangkok opened in 1998 on the Thonburi bank of the Chao Phraya, and its shape is the point. The tower was built as a shallow W — a wave — so that every one of its rooms faces the river rather than the building next door. Thirty-seven floors hold around 370 rooms and suites, and there is not a city-view room among them.
That decision is why the hotel is still regarded as one of the great riverside properties twenty-five years on. From the upper floors the whole sweep of the river is visible, with the old town, Wat Arun and the Grand Palace upstream and the shipping working its way down toward the gulf. The grounds run to the water's edge with lawns and a three-tiered pool, which is rare space for a hotel this central.
Being on the Thonburi side sounds like a drawback and is not. The Peninsula runs its own boats across to the Saphan Taksin pier continuously, which puts BTS Saphan Taksin, Sathon and Silom minutes away, and the crossing itself is the best commute in Bangkok. ICONSIAM is a short ride along the bank.
Guests here are typically staying several days and moving between the river, the old town and the business district — enough time that clothes need washing rather than rinsing.
