ABOUT THIS STAY
Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok
Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok is a hotel in the Riverside–Charoen Krung area of Bangkok. It stands on Oriental Avenue in Bang Rak, Bangkok 10500. It sits about 2.2 km from the Sathon branch that runs this area, with 22 other addresses we collect from inside a 500 m walk. The nearest address we already collect from is The China House, about 50 m away.
Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok has a front desk, so the usual arrangement is the simplest one: leave the bag with the concierge on your way out and it is back at the same desk when you return. Wash & Fold comes back folded flat and packed for a suitcase; Wash & Iron comes back pressed and on hangers. Next day is standard, and same day is available when the booking is confirmed before 2pm.
The building sits on Oriental Avenue, Bang Rak. BTS Saphan Taksin is roughly a ten-minute walk from the door (566 m) and BTS Krung Thon Buri is about 573 m, so guests here have two lines within walking distance. Our driver comes by road rather than by rail, so the pickup window is the one you agree with us, not the train timetable.
Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok is not a one-off stop for us: on the same round we also collect at The China House (50 m), New Road Guesthouse (300 m) and Bossotel Inn (350 m). A van that is already on this street is the reason a same-day return is realistic here when the booking is confirmed before 2pm.
More about this place to stay
Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok is the oldest hotel in the city and the one every other riverside property is measured against. It keeps 1876 as its official opening year, though the record is older and messier than that: a hotel called the Oriental stood on this bend of the Chao Phraya by 1863, run by two Americans, Atkins Dyer and William West, and burned down on 11 June 1865.
What survives from the rebuilding is the Authors' Wing. Hans Niels Andersen commissioned the Italian architects Cardu and Rossi, and the building opened on 14 May 1887 — a low colonial block that is now the quietest corner of the hotel, holding fourteen suites named for the writers who stayed in it: Somerset Maugham, Joseph Conrad, Noël Coward, Graham Greene, James Michener. Afternoon tea is served there, and it is worth booking even if you are staying elsewhere.
The address is the river itself, on Oriental Avenue in Bang Rak. The hotel's own boats cross to its spa and its Thai restaurant on the Thonburi bank, the Chao Phraya express boats stop at Oriental pier, and BTS Saphan Taksin is a short walk south. Charoen Krung, the oldest paved road in Bangkok, runs behind it past the old trading houses and the Assumption Cathedral.
Guests at Mandarin Oriental can use GO Laundry PX's laundry pickup and delivery from the hotel. We collect at the front desk or from you directly, wash each order on its own so it never shares a machine with another guest's, and return it to the same address — folded flat the KonMari way for packing, or pressed and returned on hangers. Next day is standard; same day is confirmed at booking before 2pm.
