Roompini sits on Sarasin Road, the short street that runs along the northern edge of Lumphini Park between Ratchadamri and Wireless Road. For a visitor, that one fact does most of the explaining: the park is across the road, and Sarasin is the street Bangkok residents know for its row of old shophouse restaurants and jazz bars, which fill up late and empty out into the park in the morning.
The building belongs to the small residential pocket behind the Royal Bangkok Sports Club, with Baan Ratchadamri about fifty metres away and Park View Mansion and 185 Rajadamri within a hundred. It is a genuinely quiet corner: nine other addresses on our daily round are within a 500-metre walk, which in this district means the block is homes rather than offices and hotels.
BTS Ratchadamri is about 550 metres north, which puts the Ratchaprasong crossing — CentralWorld, Gaysorn, the Erawan Shrine — within ten minutes on foot, and Silom two stops away on the train. Langsuan, one street east, has the cafes and small restaurants. The Sports Club racecourse behind gives the whole area an open horizon that almost nowhere else in central Bangkok has.
It suits somebody staying for weeks rather than nights, who wants a residential street and a park rather than a hotel lobby.
