Holiday Inn Bangkok stands on Ploenchit Road above BTS Chit Lom, and it shares a plot and a history with the InterContinental next door. The building traded as Le Meridien President until IHG took over management, put roughly thirteen million dollars into a renovation, and reopened it as Holiday Inn Bangkok in early 2005. The two hotels still share a driveway, which occasionally confuses arriving taxis.
The address is the argument. BTS Chit Lom is about 150 metres away, Gaysorn Village is a hundred and fifty, Central Chidlom is across the road, and the elevated skywalk from the station reaches CentralWorld, Gaysorn Amarin, the Erawan Shrine and eventually Central Embassy without touching a pavement. For a visitor who wants to shop, eat and get on a train without negotiating Bangkok traffic, there are perhaps three better-placed hotels in the city.
It is a large, practical hotel rather than a boutique one: a rooftop pool on the podium, several restaurants, and rooms looking either north over Ratchaprasong or south toward Lumphini. Twenty-six other addresses on our daily round sit within a 500-metre walk.
It draws families and business travellers in roughly equal measure, and a good share of guests here are in Bangkok for a week or more, which is when a hotel laundry list priced by the garment starts to add up.
