The Athenee Hotel stands on the grounds of Kandhavas Palace, the Wireless Road residence of HRH Princess Valaya Alongkorn, a daughter of King Chulalongkorn. That lineage is the hotel's organising idea rather than a footnote: the interiors were rebuilt to read as early twentieth-century European with Thai detail running through it, the period when a Siamese princess would have furnished a palace exactly that way. The refurbishment won a Five Star Asia Pacific Property Award for best hotel interior in Thailand, and the property joined Marriott's Luxury Collection in 2017. It holds 374 rooms and suites.
What a visitor notices first is the space. Palace grounds mean a large plot, so the hotel has room for a driveway, gardens and a ballroom in a part of Bangkok where most buildings go straight up from the pavement. The afternoon tea in the lobby has been a Bangkok institution for years, and it is one of the few places in the city where the ritual is treated seriously.
Wireless Road itself is the embassy street, named for the radio station built along it a century ago, unusually leafy and unusually quiet. BTS Phloen Chit is a few minutes' walk, Lumphini Park is at the far end, and the Ratchaprasong malls are one station away.
