Athenee Residence is a serviced apartment building on Wireless Road, next door to the Athenee Hotel whose name it shares and a hundred metres from Four Points by Sheraton. It sits in the densest part of the road: forty-nine other addresses on our daily collection round are within a 500-metre walk, which for a residential building is a lot and tells you this stretch is where Wireless, Ploenchit and Ruam Rudi all meet.
Wireless Road is the diplomatic street of Bangkok. It carries the name of the country's first radio transmitters, and the embassies that line it — American, British, Dutch, Vietnamese — bring walled gardens and mature trees with them, which is why a road this central stays this quiet. Lumphini Park is at the southern end.
BTS Phloen Chit is about 200 metres from the door, which is close enough to matter every day: Central Embassy and Central Chidlom are one stop or a short walk west, Terminal 21 and Asok are three stops east, and the airport link at Phaya Thai is reachable with one change.
People take a serviced apartment here for a posting, a project or a long family visit rather than for a weekend, in a unit with a kitchen and a sitting room. That length of stay is exactly when the laundry stops fitting into an evening.
