Ambassador Hotel Bangkok is one of the largest hotels in the city and one of the oldest still trading on Sukhumvit. Built in the 1980s at 171 Sukhumvit Soi 11, it runs to several hundred rooms across more than one tower, and it was designed from the start as a self-contained complex rather than a single building: a shopping arcade, a run of restaurants and cafes, a large outdoor pool, meeting space, a hair salon, and a garden in the middle that has become a genuine bird habitat.
That garden is the thing guests remember. It is a rare piece of open planted ground in this part of Sukhumvit, where almost every plot has been built to the boundary.
Soi 11 outside is one of the busiest lanes on lower Sukhumvit, full of bars, restaurants and late-night places, and BTS Nana is about 250 metres away at the mouth of the soi. That puts Asok, Terminal 21 and the MRT interchange one stop east, and Ploenchit, Central Embassy and the Ratchaprasong malls one or two stops west. Benchakitti Park is a short ride south.
