Montien Hotel Surawong Bangkok was opened by Queen Sirikit on Valentine's Day 1967, and the Tantakit family has owned and run it ever since — which makes it one of the very few independent hotels of its generation still in the same hands. The 200-room South Wing came first; the 300-room North Wing followed ten years later.
The architecture is worth looking at before you walk in. Both wings are mid-1960s Thai modernism: the South Wing's façade was drawn from the segmented culm of bamboo, and the North Wing's windows step in a serrated pattern between floors. Very little of that period survives in central Bangkok, and almost none of it still working as originally built.
A major renovation in 2021, led by executive director Montien Tantakit with Conduit House, reworked the rooms and added five dining outlets and eight meeting rooms without erasing the building's character — the aim stated plainly as reviving the original rather than replacing it.
Surawong sits one street north of Silom in Bang Rak. BTS Sala Daeng and MRT Si Lom are a short walk, Patpong is immediately adjacent, and the Chao Phraya and BTS Saphan Taksin are about ten minutes west. Lumphini Park closes the eastern end.
