Volve Hotel Bangkok has 28 rooms over five floors on Soi Sukhumvit 53, about 150 metres in from the main road, and it is the smallest hotel of its class in this part of the city. At that size it runs more like a guesthouse with a design budget than a hotel.
The interiors were drawn from the heritage houses that used to fill these sois — mid-century Sukhumvit architecture reinterpreted through period furniture, salvaged materials and details that quote the old neighbourhood rather than copy it. The result is a building that reads as local, which almost nothing new on Sukhumvit does.
There are four room types, from King Studios to a two-bedroom suite with two bathrooms and its own living room. The studios look onto the garden and carry a full work table, which makes them usable for a working stay rather than just a night's sleep.
Soi 53 is quiet and residential, and Thong Lo begins immediately next door: two kilometres of izakaya, ramen counters, independent restaurants, coffee roasters and late bars, serving the large Japanese community here. BTS Thong Lo is about a hundred metres from the hotel, putting Phrom Phong and the Em District one stop west and Ekkamai one stop east.
Guests at a 28-room hotel tend to stay longer and travel lighter than the tower guests around them.
