Hotel JAL City Bangkok opened on 3 July 2023 with 324 rooms, and it matters more than its size suggests: it is the sixteenth hotel in the Hotel JAL City chain and the first anywhere outside Japan. The building was previously the Hotel Verve Bangkok, rebuilt and rebranded under the Okura Nikko group, which also runs Hotel Nikko a few doors away.
What the brand brings is omotenashi — Japanese service as a discipline rather than a slogan — applied to a mid-scale city hotel rather than a luxury one. Rooms are larger than the Japanese originals, and the operation is built for guests who will be in the building for a week and want it to work without friction.
The choice of Thong Lo is the obvious one for a Japanese chain. Soi Sukhumvit 55 is where Bangkok's Japanese community concentrates, and the lane is lined with izakaya, ramen counters, bakeries and supermarkets that serve residents rather than tourists. BTS Thong Lo is about three minutes on foot, putting Phrom Phong and the Em District one stop west, Asok and Terminal 21 three stops, and Ekkamai one stop east.
Guests are largely business travellers working with the Japanese firms along this stretch of Sukhumvit, staying several nights in shirts that need pressing.
