Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok opened in 2020 as the first Kimpton in Southeast Asia, at 78 Soi Ton Son in Lumphini. It holds around 360 rooms and suites, of which 97 are serviced residences for longer stays, and it is arranged so that most of the accommodation looks out over Lumphini Park rather than into another building.
That outlook is the point of the address. Soi Ton Son runs between Langsuan and Ratchadamri, one street back from the malls, and the park's 140 rai of lake, lawn and monitor lizards begins a few minutes' walk away. It is quieter than Ratchaprasong without being far from it.
The hotel's best-known room is on the fortieth floor. Bar.Yard was built as a backyard in the sky: astroturf, string lights, a barbecue kitchen and low furniture, with the whole of central Bangkok laid out beyond the railing. It draws a crowd who are not staying in the hotel, which is unusual and says something about how the place is run. Kimpton's house rituals are all here too — the evening social hour, and a genuinely dog-friendly policy in a city where that is rare.
For a visitor, Ton Son is a good compromise: BTS Ratchadamri and Chit Lom are both a walk away, Central Embassy and Gaysorn are ten minutes on foot, and you can be in the park before breakfast.
