SO/ Bangkok stands on the corner of North Sathon and Rama IV, directly opposite Lumphini Park, and it is the most designed hotel in the city in the literal sense. The building takes the five elements — water, earth, wood, metal, fire — as its organising idea, with a different leading Thai designer interpreting each one across a set of rooms, so the floors genuinely do not match. Smith Obayawat and Pongthep Sagulku worked on it, and Christian Lacroix designed the staff uniforms and parts of the interior.
The result is a hotel where the room you get changes the stay. Earth rooms are dark stone and timber; water rooms are pale and reflective; fire rooms are red and lacquered. The rooftop pool and bar look straight across the park.
That park is the other half of the appeal. Lumphini is 140 rai of lake, lawn and old banyan trees immediately across Rama IV, and the hotel's upper floors face it, which in this district means an unbroken green view instead of another tower. MRT Lumphini is at the corner, Silom and Sathon are a few minutes west, and BTS Sala Daeng is a short walk.
