WHAT THIS STOP IS LIKE

The round around
Hua Lamphong.

MRT Hua Lamphong sits in Old Town–Yaowarat, the area we work around Yaowarat's Chinatown, Rattanakosin island and the Grand Palace. The subway keeps its schedule in any weather, which is the half of the year that matters here.

Most of the collections here are on Rama IV Road, Soi Sunthon Phimon, Yotha Road. The mix is 23 hotels, 17 hostels, 3 condominiums, which is why the handoff differs from building to building — a hotel has a concierge, a condo has a lobby counter, and a serviced apartment usually has both.

Hua Lamphong is named after the old central railway station, the vaulted Italianate hall that sent trains to Chiang Mai and the south for over a century before the services moved to Bang Sue in 2021. The building is still there, still magnificent, and now mostly a museum piece.

The round around it is backpacker Bangkok — 23 hotels and 17 hostels among 45 addresses, along Rama IV and the lanes behind. Chinatown starts a few minutes west and the old town beyond it, so this is where people base themselves for temples and street food rather than malls.

Fifteen addresses are inside 300 metres. The hostel share matters for laundry: these are travellers three weeks into a trip with one bag, for whom a wash is not a convenience but the reason they can keep going.

A few addresses near this station belong to Riverside (9) and Sathon (4) instead. The route that reaches them is the same either way; the guide on each property page says which one it is on.
